Ralph

Up

Ralph is a skeleton head who moves at the neck on 2 axis left right, up down. His Jaw moves up and down for speech and his eyes light up yellow. The project was borne out of a friends desire to do a haunted house.

This was a particularly fun project especially given the personality of the result.

Ralph!

The innards of his skull.

These servos control Jaw movement and left-right axis. In this view the servo on the right controls LR movement.

Neck Joint

Wires are controls for Jaw and LR servos in the skull.

Open Wide!

Neck

THis is the neck joint from in front looking up at his Jaw.

Skull Workings

Spine

Note the wire running from base to box

Ralphs Backpack

It contains the controller and electronics. I'm looking for a little doll size backpack to cover it.

UP/dn Servo

On the bottom of the controller box. The control wire runs up the spine between the box and spinal column. Also note the DB-9 connector. Power and data via standard RS-232 9 pin connector.

Electronics!

Servo controller board. 8 channel PWM output, serial driven.

More stuff

Mechanics of the skull.

I'm proud of this. One of the things that made this much easier was the existing mounting towers under the plate. The skeleton manufacturer clearly had something in mind for inside the brain cavity.

Neck Joint

Neck pivot showing bushing and wire connector down to UP/dn servo.

Neck Joint

This clearly shows the UP/dn pivot point and the downward pulling spring. This spring is only necessary for extream "chin-up" position, otherwise the weight of the skull would be sufficient.

In the mouth Again

Looking Down on his cute little head.
